Building a Pier on Weston Beach

by James on July 29th, 2011

Here’s a few photos from a recent project that I worked on with young people from Weston Super Mare in North Somerset.

The group were working towards their Silver Arts Award and wanted to make a sculpture from rubbish washed up on or collected from the beach…. plus a few interesting resources that I brought along from the Swindon Scrapstore.

Part of their project was to involve the local community by inviting visitors to the beach to join in and by taking their sculpture to a local festival for people to try out.

We kicked off the project by inviting young people to the YMCA in central Weston one evening to create designs and make models of what they wanted to make.

Then a few days later, in the middle of a mini sandstorm and after torrential rain, we set up on the beach and the young people went off handing out flyers and putting up posters to attract members of the local community to come and help out.

The sculpture was a combination of a piece of bench washed up on the beach, some old pallets left at the now empty and dilapidated Tropicana Pool, and other bits and pieces.
Everyone did a great job, the sun came out and the pier (made in sections for transport) will be shared locally at Boomfest, a festival for families this August.
