Cutting the Ties that Bind (well, adapting them anyway)

by James on August 1st, 2011

Here’s a few images of some work I’ve been making from charity shop bought ties, adapted by the addition of found images and materials.

As with my earlier post that showed some work made with formal white shirts, I’m interested in taking formal male clothing like these ties, and cutting through its uniformity and symbolism.

I’m playing with how they look in order to look at the possibility of liberating them from their associations with the emotional repression of men in our society, and to blur the boundaries between the wearer of this ‘uniform’ and the ecological world around them to which they belong.
