Creating Shelters From Recycled Materials

by James on August 5th, 2011

I had another great session with the Wonder Tree club yesterday. After postponing our shelter building until the afternoon due to amazingly heavy rain, the sun came out and the children were raring to go.

It was a mixed age range group from around 5 to 11 so it was interesting to see how they  were (mainly) able to work together, with a bit of negotiation, sharing their individual ideas and different ways of using the materials on offer.

We gave the children wooden stakes and bamboo and some willow to build an initial structure, plus cardboard sheeting, fabric and assorted plastic tubes, bottles, lids and other Scrapstore wonders for them to conjure into shelter gadgets and accessories.

The end result was two shelters and a range of rain catching equipment, telescopes, telephones, megaphones and defensive weapons to guard them. The process of making saw them explore and adapt a range of reclaimed objects and materials, finding new uses and seeing old things in a new light.
